ZONE started off as Takayo Ookoshi along with seven other dancers, but was eventually reduced to four members. After becoming popular, the four girls learned to play their own instruments to complement their singing and dancing.

In 2002, the group won the Japan Gold Disk New Artist of the Year. In late 2003, however, band leader Takayo announced her departure from ZONE to pursue her studies. She was replaced by Tomoka Nishimura, the last member cut from the band before they made up the «original» four - supposedly for being too tall.

The band disbanded on April 1st, 2005. Mizuho had wanted to leave but the group neither wished to replace her nor continue on as a three-girl band. They all agreed that positive disbanding would be the best solution so as to avoid an upsetting end.

ZONE played their last concert together at the Nippon Budokan on April 1st, concluding their Spring Tour. The final song they played was their all-time famous Secret Base.
